The Pediatric Research Foundation at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital
A healthy and harmonious childhood is the basis for our well-being. One would think, therefore, that medical research in children's diseases would be one of society's priorities. But that is not always so - there is often a gap between the finances needed for the research and those provided.
By raising funds from a spectrum of private donors -individual and corporate - the Pediatric Research Foundation of Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital bridges part of this gap.
The Foundation finances pediatric research fellowships as well as public seminars and podcasts. Every year the Foundation award 10-20 young pediatric scientists with a scholarship. There are also two research awards; Hugo Lagercrantz Award and Olle Söder Award, awarded annually at an educational seminar. Our Foundation also do educational as well as information activities. We have a new effort in releasing educational and informative podcasts on important up-to-date pediatric issues. Up to now we have six podcast, a growing number. Our ambition is to share these with concerned parents and other interested.
Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital is part of Karolinska University Hospital and the research supported by the Foundation is typically carried out by Karolinska Institute by one or several units within the Department of Woman and Child Health, the work focusing on neonatology, pediatric neurology, endocrinology and clinical pediatrics.
In addition, collaborative Indo-Swedish research specifically addressing child diseases among poor children in India was launched in 2009, for a five years reseach in partnership with the IKEA Foundation. The fields selected are infectious diseases, immunology and newborn illnesses. The first four-year study concerns pneumonia and will be completed in 2014. The second study concerns meningitis and encephalitis, and has started in the beginning of 2013.
